This course focuses on resolving design issues that arise due to contemporary needs and requirements concerning comfort, culture, and efficiency in living and working environments in the urban context.

 

The nature and complexity of the project shall be:

a)      Medium scale, medium span, multi-functional spaces that incorporate appropriate building services and environmental control systems.

b)      The project to be designed ranged from two (2) to three (3) storey buildings with space provisions ranging between 900 to 1,500 square metres of built-up area.

c)      The integration of the existing urban infrastructure, engineering aspects of building services and systems; architectural form and the structural system; are among the major issues that will be explored in this studio.

d)      Types of projects may include Art Gallery, Boutique Hotel, Community Masjid, Markets and others as an urban infill.

 

Islamic values and appropriate application of regulatory requirements will be assimilated throughout the course as part of the design process.

 

Site visits, fieldwork, and an urban trail are essential requirements of the course, helping students understand the urban context, factors that influence urban architecture, and the importance of place.

 

Verbal, written, and graphic communication skills are integrated into a process and are part of the course's project outcomes. The studio encouraged, where appropriate, the use of computer-aided design tools to visualise their design proposal, design process, and final output.
